Forklifts

As a rule, in an industrial environment industrial trucks have to manoeuvre in tight spaces. Particularly when reversing vision is impaired. Despite large reversing mirrors, cameras and ultrasound warning systems, serious and sometimes fatal accidents still occur.

When manoeuvring a vehicle with a reversing mirror and camera system, everything depends on the concentration and judgement of the driver. Both deteriorate with repeated identical movements in a loud environment. Ultrasound systems detect each and every obstacle, with the result that warning signals are quickly ignored. U-Tech's collision warning system is based on modern RFID (radio frequency identification) technology and avoids these disadvantages.

The French Research Institute for Occupational Safety (INRS) has commissioned U-Tech to develop a warning system for industrial trucks that helps to avoid such accidents, some of which are fatal. Here, a type of antenna is attached to the truck which creates a protective magnetic field up to 8 metres behind the vehicle when the reverse gear is engaged. The people to be protected carry a small component twice the size of a matchbox with them or wear a smaller device designed like a wristwatch. If this transponder enters the magnetic field, it transmits a radio signal that is converted by the control unit in the vehicle to warn the driver either optically or acoustically. The driver is instructed to bring the vehicle to an immediate safe halt as soon as he or she notices the alarm. As the system has a reaction time of fractions of a second, serious or even fatal collisions can be avoided.
